Libyan aircraft hostage situation brought under control

No less than 109 passengers have been freed by hijackers who held an Afriqiyah Airways plane hostage, and diverted it to Malta.

Confirming the number of passengers released in a tweet posted on his timeline, Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat revealed that 109 passengers have been released, including members of the flight crew.

The two heavily armed men who hijacked the plane claimed to be pro-Ghadafi fighters and revealed that they have hand grenades, threatening to blow up the aircraft unless their demands were met.

However, the situations seems to have been brought under control as Tim Diacono, a journalist from Malta Today, told Al Jazeera that the situation is being handled peacefully.

“There are people leaving the airplane as we speak, so it looks like it is being resolved peacefully, but it’s still too early to tell.”
