The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have also embarked on a protest march to the state’s police headquarters.

The party during the exercise submitted what it said was an audio recording of Governor Nyesome Wike of the state threatening to kill an electoral officer during the last rerun election in the state.

It would be recalled that the governor, a day before, had also led a protest march to the same police headquarters, calling for the removal of two officers he accused of unprofessional conducts during the rerun elections.

On their part, the APC members led by one Asita Honourable, stormed the police headquarters, claiming that the governor had been caught pants down, and that there was no way he could wriggle out of it.

Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Mr. Chris Finebone, said it was usual for the governor to allege blackmail because that was how people caught in such situations responded in time past.

He continued, “Having been caught in the web of their own machinations, what do you expect Governor Nyesom Wike and his Commissioner to say? Often when anyone is caught pants down, the most convenient and ready response is to blame and blackmail others. The truth remains that Governor Wike in that audio tape was caught pants down and he simply cannot find where to hide”.

In a separate statement, Spokesman of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi said: “Going by the revelations from the leaked audio recordings, it is obvious that Governor Wike may have engaged in unwholesome conducts that might have compromised the integrity of the electoral process and undermined his office as the Chief Security Officer of a state.

“The only logical conclusion from this, therefore, is that the electoral victories of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, may have been achieved through underhand dealings and intimidation of officials.”

But reacting, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Dr Austin Tam George, said the audio recording is an impersonation of the governor, made with a voice changer technology.

According to him, “It is the online propaganda bullhorn of APC. Their publications are typically false and the writers are professional hawkers of fiction. No one would have thought that the APC and its media allies would resort to an audio impersonation of Governor Wike, using a voice changer technology”

Meanwhile, Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Don Awunah in a statement in reaction to Governor Wike’s allegations against some officers said “it is very unfair, insensitive and uncharitable to cast aspersions on the name of the police in order to score cheap political points. The Police must be insulated from politics. The era of political police officer is gone and the apolitical nature of policing must be sustained and strengthened.

“The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, FSARS, officers who the governor kept referring to in his diatribes against the police were indeed at the scene to arrest hoodlums who were there to cart away ballot papers.
“The video clips trending in the media are obviously skewed and doctored to suit predetermined political agenda.”
