Liverpool climb to EPL top four with win over Arsenal

After suffering a shock defeat to Leicester on Monday, Liverpool fired up their game as they triumphed 3-1 over Arsenal in their English Premier League clash at Anfield on Saturday.

Roberto Firmino’s ninth-minute finish put the Reds ahead, before Sadio Mane doubled the lead with an emphatic strike five minutes before half-time.

Sanchez came on as a substitute at the start of the second half and set up a goal for Danny Welbeck right before the hour mark, before Georginio Wijnaldum struck deep into injury-time to seal Liverpool’s win.

“The most important thing is the reaction to losing and we reacted today and got the three points,” second goal scorer, Sadio Mane, told reporters after the win.

“The performance of the team was great.

“We work together as a team, we were compact from the beginning until the end and we are happy to win.”

Liverpool are now up to third, level with Manchester City on 52 points – but Arsenal are now in fifth trailing the pair by two points.

Manager Arsene Wenger gambled by leaving the Gunners’ leading scorer, Alexis Sanchez, on the bench, about which he admitted at the end of the game that “the strikers (fielded) suffered in the first half” as the team also failed to “dominate in the midfield.”

He added: “We conceded cheap goals – direct balls from the goalkeeper and you do not expect that in a game like this but we came back in the second half, responded well, but didn’t perform at our level in the first half,” Wenger said after the match.

Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp, who got fans’ bashing on Monday for losing to champions Leicester, was happy about the win and referred to the tie as “the best game” his team have played this season, considering the make-up of their opponent.

“It was one of the best games we have played so far because the strength and the line-up of opponent.

“We did really well. We had hard words after the defeat at Leicester. We analysed it and that wasn’t enjoyable.

“We had another opportunity and we took it today.”
