Liverpool falter in top-four race with draw against Southampton

Liverpool were held by visiting Southampton after playing out a goalless draw against the Saints in their Premier League encounter on Sunday.

Liverpool rarely tested Saints keeper Fraser Forster, bar the penalty and Marko Grujic’s header late in the game. The visitors, meanwhile, failed to muster even one effort on target.

Philippe Coutinho created the first real chance at goal but his shot from outside the box was saved by Fraser Forster in the 24th minute.

Ten minutes later Roberto Firmino also fired a right footed shot from outside the box which was saved in the bottom left corner by Forster again.

The Reds’ best chance to score came in the 66th minute when they won a penalty after Southampton’s Jack Stephens was judged to have handled Lucas’ delivery.

But James Milner’s effort was saved by goalkeeper Forster who dived low to his right.

The result leaves Liverpool on third position, one point above Manchester City, who have a game in hand.

“It is not finished yet. We all have to play our games. We go to West Ham and try to win, and that’s all we can do. We try everything and we do not stop,” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said after the game.
