Lookman, Osimhen fire Super Eagles past Benin in AFCON qualifier
Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen were on target for the Super Eagles of Nigeria as they cruised past Benin Republic on Saturday evening.
The game played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo was the matchday one fixture of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying series.
Nigeria, led by caretaker coach Austin Eguavoen, secured a 3-0 victory to begin their road to next year’s Nations Cup on a bright note.
A brace from Lookman, and a goal from Osimhen were enough to earn Eguavoen a crucial win in his first match on return as interim Super Eagles coach.

It was a return to winning ways for the Eagles who headed into Saturday’s clash on the back of three games without a win (two defeats, one draw).
The last time both teams met was in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June in Abidjan, where the Beninoise come from a goal down to win 2-1.
Up next in the qualifiers for the Eagles is a matchday 2 fixture away to Rwanda on Tuesday, September 10.
