Magistrates begin indefinite strike over unmet demands in Cross River

Magistrates in Cross River have declared an indefinite strike beginning from Monday.

The strike followed the state government’s failure to address their eight-point demands on improved working conditions.

The Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Cross River State Chapter, in a bulletin released on Sunday, the association said its demands were first communicated to the government in a meeting on November 5.

In the bulletin signed by the chairman, Godwin Onah, and secretary, Solomon Abuo, the association stressed that the strike would continue indefinitely until all their demands are met.

A letter was also sent to the governor on November 11 and the strike notice was extended till November 22.

“All magistrates in the state have been instructed to abstain from all official duties, including court sittings, until further notice,” the bulletin read.

This is not the first time the magistrates have resorted to an industrial action.

In November, they embarked on a three-day warning strike to protest the poor welfare and unsatisfactory working conditions in the state.

The magistrates are demanding, among other things, the implementation of promotions, regularization of magistrates with financial benefits, and the payment of all accrued arrears.

They are also calling for the rehabilitation of magistrate courts across the state and the provision of official vehicles to magistrates.
