Magu advocates that EFCC keep percentage of recovered loots
The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, wants the commission to retain a percentage of loots recovered by it to fund its operations.
In this direction, Magu, on Tuesday, called for a review of Nigerian laws so that anti-graft agences in the country can fund their operations from monies recovered by them.
The EFCC boss made the call on Tuesday at the national anti-corruption conference organised by the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC) and the National Assembly in Abuja.
According Magu, the review will be in comformity with best international practices.
Magu said: “In some jurisdictions like the UK, proceeds of crime are further used to strengthen the agency.
“In EFCC, we have been struggling for years to build our headquarters and when I think of the billions of naira we recover, I can see what would have happened if we are allowed to apply a percentage of this recovery into our operations.”

He further called for the placement of the burden of proof on accused person in corruption cases by reviewing the nation’s anti-corruption laws.
“One the issues that concerns us in the EFCC is that of non-conviction based recovery.
“It is of great concern to us that the burden is on us to prove in court that this is a proceed of crime.
“But in other climes the accused has to prove that the property he has, actually represents the fruit of his labour.
“There is the need for the Act to make a provision for an application of the proceeds of crime into recapitalising the anti graft agencies.”

what operations are they requiring money to fund that the federal government are not providing for them? this is a means of stealing money. EFCC needs a body too that will always investigate their operations and arrest corrupt officers among them too. if they like , they should leave their headquarter ‘s building uncompleted. mtccchew

he has forgotten that this is Nigeria and not UK. If EFCC is allowed to have looted percentage being kept by them, EFCC officials will soon be richer than the politicians and Magu might become the richest man in Africa soon. Lol.
