Mahrez in transfer tussle as Leicester reject Roma bid

Reigning African Footballer of the Year, Riyad Mahrez, has been denied a move to Serie A side, AS Roma after his club Leicester City rejected their bid.

This was confirmed by the Foxes manager, Craig Shakespeare, who said the offer was low.

The Algerian forward had announced his readiness to leave the former English champions this summer, but his possible move to Arsenal made no head way as the Gunners backed out claiming his fee was high.

The 26-year-old, who joined the Foxes from French club Le Havre in 2014, has again been denied a move from Leicester

“The bid was politely declined because it was a low offer,” said Shakespeare.

“I don’t know what it was and I don’t get involved.”

Mahrez, PFA player of the year in 2016, has reportedly been valued at £50m.

Shakespeare, who is with the Foxes in Hong Kong for a pre-season tournament, had said earlier this week there had been no bids for Mahrez.

“Mine is really simple: while he is here and while we have had no bids – and we haven’t had any bids, it’s all been speculation – he has to be committed to the football club,” he said.

Meanwhile, the London Evening Standard reports that Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring the striker, but are however not willing to pay the £50m fee.

Spurs have yet to make a signing so far this summer but are keen on signing the winger and have asked the Leicester to keep them informed if other clubs make a bid

Mahrez made 48 appearances for Leicester last season, scoring 10 goals and providing seven assists, to help Leicester recover from a poor start to finish 12th in the Premier League and reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
