MAIDUGURI: Soldiers repel rampaging Boko Haram attack

An attack by rampaging Boko Haram insurgents who were said to have torched some houses and vandalized vehicles on Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu Road in Borno State was reportedly repelled by men of the Nigerian army.

Reports say the insurgents attacked a security check point at Moloi area, on the outskirts of Maiduguri and according to an eyewitness identified as Aji Maina, the insurgents shot indiscriminately, a situation which made villagers in the vicinity to scamper for safety until the timely intervention of soldiers in the area.

Maina said; “The insurgents attacked the ED security section, torched houses and motorists caught in the cross fire. “At present, no one can ascertain the extent of damages or casualties in the attack.

“Many people fled their homes and scampered for safety into Maiduguri,” he said, however that security had been beefed up in the metropolis to thwart any breach of peace while people were going about their normal activities.

Reacting to the incident, Maj Gen RI Nicholas, Theatre Commander, Operation LAFIYA DOLE in a statement, said “this evening, there was an attempted attack by suspected Boko Haram terrorist who came with Person Borne Improvised Explosives Devices (PIED) and gun trucks to steal foodstuff and also attack troops around Molai area, outskirts of Maiduguri, but met stiff resistance from troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE who repelled them and secured the community.

“No lost of lives to own troops and normalcy has since been restored.

“Meanwhile troops have been on the trail of the remnants of the terrorists. Unfortunately, during their retreat, they set two vehicles on fire and some thatched houses at the outskirts of the city gate.

“Both ground troops and the Nigerian Air Force are on hot pursuit and interdicting the fleeing terrorists that are now in disarray”, he claimed.
