Man docked for murder, rape and abuse of corpse not fit for trial, Defense attorney says

Defense lawyers for a 35-year-old man, charged with murder, rape and abuse of a corpse in the September 2014 slaying of 46-year-old Tammy Jo Blanton say he is not fit to stand trial.

Citing the fact that he has “consistently appeared irrational and expressed bizarre thoughts at hearings”, the attorneys of the southern Indiana man, Joseph Oberhansley, accused of killing his former girlfriend and eating parts of her body in 2014 say he’s not competent to be tried.

Reports say the defense lawyers of Oberhansley who has repeatedly denied the allegations and who could be sentenced to death if convicted, filed a document saying Joseph Oberhansley can’t consult with them or understand court proceedings.

A March 8 hearing is planned where Oberhansley’s lawyers could discuss their concerns. A June trial was earlier scheduled but could be delayed.
