Man loses life to trigger-happy policemen during raids
A father of one unfortunately lost his life when trigger-happy policemen shot sporadically during a raid at Osogbo Street in the Itire area of Lagos State.
Sources say a hoodlum resident in the area was dispossessed of a gun last week and as a way of getting back at those who took his gun away from him, he reported to the police at the Itire division alleging that residents of the area were in possession of guns.
Reports say the police then swung into action by storming the area and shooting indiscriminately when the victim identified as Elewure (a commercial bus driver) who was passing by was hit by a stray bullet.
Reports say another resident of the area was also hit by a bullet but he fortunately survived the incident as he was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital.
Following the incident, a full investigation was carried out following which two policemen in the patrol team were arrested by the Aguda Police Division and were being detained at the Area C Command, Surulere.
An eyewitness and resident of the area, Musa Onitire recounted happenings during the raids by the policemen.
“I learnt that two groups fought over the ownership of a gun a day before the incident. The policemen were invited from Itire to make peace between the groups on that Wednesday.
“In the afternoon, I began to hear gunshots. Everyone left their goods and fled, while some people locked their doors. When the dust settled, a man was found dead; the victim did not belong to either of the factions.
“The deceased was a commercial driver. He was a hardworking man,” the resident said.
According to Dolapo Badmos, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer said investigations into the case were still ongoing.
