Man rejects N1m help, hugs electric wires in suicide attempt

A 30-year-old man was saved from the horror of taking his own life after the sudden restoration of power supply threw him off a high tension pole.

Reports say the yet-to-be identified man said to be an orphan had climbed a high tension pole close to Jevinik Restaurant in New GRA, Port Harcourt claiming he was tired of life as no one was willing to help him after he lost both parents.

Not even an attempt by a clergyman to help him by offering to give him N1 million was enough to make him abandon the suicide bid.

The man’s attempt to take his life attracted residents of the area who begged him to reconsider his decision with reports suggesting that an appeal by a General Overseer of a popular church in the area who promised him N1m if he would change his mind, also did not help matters.

According to an eyewitness, the victim initially touched some naked wires inside the two electric transformers, but wasn’t electrocuted.

However, immediately power was restored, he was thrown up by a power surge and landed unconscious on the ground.

The witness said; “The man said he was tired of life and that since he was without a mother and father who could help him, he decided to take his life. OPM General Overseer came here and begged him (suicide victim) to come down; the man of God even promised him N1m, but the man refused to come down.

“After the pastor left, about 30 minutes later, the man touched one of the high tension cables and the thing threw him up before he landed unconsciously on the ground.

“We tried to revive him; as soon as he regained consciousness, this same man rushed to climb the pole again, but we drew him down. It was at that point that some policemen, who were on patrol, came in and took him away,” the witness added.
