Man to marry late wife before burial, family insists

Published

on

A man, Stephen Mbam from Enyi Igwe village, Ezzainyimagu community in Izzi local government area of Ebonyi State must find a way to combine the joy of holding his marriage ceremony and the grief of burying his ‘wife’, at the same time.
This is because the family of his late partner, Chinyere Mbam, whom he co habited with for three years, with a child to show for it, have insisted that the marriage rites must be performed before she can be buried.

Already, the Mbam’s family, in line with the tradition of the land, has scheduled a date for payment of the bride price to be followed by the wedding.
Chinyere was reportedly bitten by a snake while returning from the wake-keep of a friend, Oge Ogashi who passed on.
She was taken to a traditional healing home in the area for treatment and thereafter back to the husband’s home as she could not respond to treatment. She thereafter gave up the ghost.
Her uncle, Ishiali Ikwe confirmed her death.
But the deceased’s family mandated her ‘husband’ to carry out her traditional marriage rites, which was never done while they lived together as partners, before she can be buried.
