Man United thrash Boro to climb 5th in Premier League

Manchester United climbed to fifth on the English Premier League table thrashing hosts Middlesbrough 3-1 in an action-filled game at the Riverside Stadium on Sunday.

It was Steve Agnew’s first game in charge after Boro sacked their manager Aitor Karanka.

Ashley Young’s deep cross found Marouane Fellaini at the back post to head past Victor Valdes on the half-hour mark, before Jesse Lingard’s terrific 62nd-minute strike doubled his side’s lead after the break.

The hosts found the net when substitute Rudy Gestede pounced after Chris Smalling made a mess of an easy clearance in the box, and the 2-1 scoreline kept the hope alive.

But at stoppage time, the hopes were lost when Boro keeper Valdes moved to one side to receive a backpass and try to kick clear but at the vital moment he slipped and left the ball and an open net for Antonio Valencia to slot it into.

“It is always a pleasure to score. It was a great cross in from Ash. It was a good goal. The game was tough in end. They pushed and played long balls and are physical. We did it. We did well,” Marouane Fellaini said after the game.

Boro’s caretaker boss could not inspire his side to a fifth Premier League win this season despite dominating possession for large periods of the game.

The win means that Jose Mourinho’s side have leapfrog Arsenal and Everton into fifth position, while Middlesbrough remain 19th on the table.
