Mane fires Liverpool past Palace

Sadio Mane scored the only goal of the game as Liverpool secure their first Premier League win of the season against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The hosts were heading for a frustrating draw after wasting a string of chances.

But the Senegalese scored his second league goal this season when he prodded past Wayne Hennessey in the 73rd minute to put the Reds ahead.

Palace, beaten 3-0 at home to Huddersfield in their opening match, suffered a second straight defeat despite an improved display at Anfield.

“It was a hard job,” Liverpool Manager, Jurgen Klopp, said after the game.

“I have no idea how much we had the ball but it was a lot. We had moments in the first half but had to be more patient because they were deep.

“We didn’t score but we didn’t give counter attacks away. Second half we did it better, the first part was really good.

“We were really awake and defended really well and I loved the goal because it was not a clear situation. It was a counter pressing situation. We had other chances but I am completely happy with how we did the job today.

“Anfield helps a lot I think today it was the difference.”

The Reds will host Bundesliga side, Hoffenheim, in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off on Wednesday.

They are leading 2-1 against the Germans.
