MANILA: 25 people killed in 14 operations as Duterte's anti-drug war continues

The anti-drug war campaign championed by President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines is becoming bloodier after no less than 25 suspected criminals were killed in 14 overnight operations in the capital of Manila.

Joel Napoleon Coronel, director of Manila Police District, told reporters the 14 were killed in sting operations and 11 other deaths were robbers who were also involved in narcotics.

It turned out to be the second night of bloodshed in the capital as a fierce war on drugs intensifies following the killing of 32 others criminals in near-simultaneous police operations on Monday night through to Tuesday in Bulacan province.

Close watchers say this period marks the deadliest period of a controversial crackdown by Duterte which has killed thousands of Filipinos.

Duterte has vowed to kill more in his anti-drug fight and says he will ask the military to help in the war against drugs even as rights group reveals police abuses.

He said the country’s drug problem has become a national security threat saying he does not intend to declare martial law, but added that his controversial war against illegal drugs will continue.
