Maradona becomes FIFA ambassador

Argentinian legend Diego Maradona has been handed an ambassadorial role by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA).

The 56-year-old made this known in a post on his Facebook page on Thursday.

Maradona had been a harsh critic of embattled past president of the football governing body, Sepp Blatter, who was forced to vacate the position in 2015 and currently serving a six-year ban for ethics violations.

But invited to take the role under new president Gianni Infantino, Maradona wrote: “Finally, I can fulfil one of the lifelong dreams, to work for a clean and transparent FIFA alongside people who really love football.”

Maradona won the 1986 World Cup with his country and enjoyed a club career with Boca Juniors, Napoli and Barcelona; and was largely considered the greatest footballer of his time.
