Massive mould of garbage collapses, killing 16 people

Tragedy struck on a part of a town outside Sri Lanka’s capital when a a massive mould of garbage collapsed killing no less than 16 people in the process and rendered more than 600 others homeless.

According to military spokesman Roshan Seneviratne, soldiers and other rescue operatives were searching the site for possible survivors even as four people were rescued from underneath the mould, but it was unclear whether any others were buried.

The Disaster Management Center said at least 12 other people were injured in the incident, which happened Friday night in Meetotamulla, a town near Colombo.

The site has been used to dump Colombo’s garbage for the past few years as authorities sought to give the capital a face-lift.
