Medical experts say economic recession affecting Nigerians mentally

The worrying mental toll Nigerians are currently facing due to the debilitation effect of recession which has gripped the country in the last two years has been brought to the notice of the Federal Government.

A group of Family physicians under the umbrella of the Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON) brought the notice to the FG at a World Family Physician Day seminar held at the Eko Hospital in Lagos.

The group informed that over seven million Nigerians are living with depression caused more by economic hardship which has seen a rise in suicide attempts in recent times.

Speaking at the seminar, President of SOFPON, Lagos Zone, Dr. Blessing Chukwukwelu said; “We hear of people drinking sniper to end their lives these days. Some leave suicide notes, many don’t.

“The economy is one of the environmental factors that can trigger depression and it is not a coincidence that it was the World Health Day Theme for 2017,” she added.

She also hinted that there is need for a higher index of suspicion by family physicians who must quickly identify mentally challenged patients who need to be managed quickly.

For sure, without being told, we know this, is it not economic recession that made people think of jumping in to the lagoon because they are mentally affected

Any one who chooses to jump in to the lagoon is just being naughty and tired of life and it’s not the issue of recession

Being broke is enough depression alone, when the economy is now bad, that makes it double depression for some people. Nigerian government has killed many of its citizens unknowingly

Economic recession will affect anyone who wants to be affected, nobody prayed for recession to hit Nigeria the time it came, when it came, the wise were quick to adapt, while the foolish lamented (and still lamenting), which ended up leading to depression for some, while some committed suicide.

It is not the economic recession that’s affecting Nigerians mentally, but the government’s bad policies and bad approach used in tackling recession. Our government is also mentally unstable because they don’t know which policy to adopt for perfection
