Messi reacts to Barca’s El Clasico victory

Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi says Barcelona has taken an important step towards winning the La Liga title after their sensational 3-2 win over Real Madrid on Sunday.

However, the 29-year old, who put up a great performance to help Barca to an agonising victory at Santiago Bernabeu, admitted they still have a long way to go.

A defeat at Bernabeu would have effectively ended the Catalans’ title hopes, but Messi’s stoppage-time winner saw them move to the summit of the league though level on points with their rivals.

Madrid will move three points clear of Barcelona again if they see off Celta Vigo in their game in hand, but Messi remains optimistic over his side’s chances of retaining the title.

Messi wrote on his Facebook wall, “We went to the Bernabeu looking for a win to keep ourselves in the battle for the La Liga title.

“There is still a long way to go, but we came away with the joy of having taken an important step.”

Messi becomes the leading goalscorer in El Clasico with the sensational last-minute equaliser that sent his side to the top spot of the Spanish League, and it was his 500th goal for Barcelona.

Messi’s first goal in a league meeting between the arch rivals came back in 2007 when he was just 19 as part of a famous hat-trick in a 3-3 draw, but on Sunday, he netted his 15th in meetings between the Spanish heavyweights in La Liga, moving ahead of the legendary Alfredo Di Stefano.
