Metuh intentionally fell down – Justice Abang

Trial of the former national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, continued on Tuesday after the Monday incident where he fell down in court.

The presiding judge in the matter, Justice Okon Abang , when the case resumed on Tuesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja argued that Metuh intentionally fell down on Monday to frustrate the court’s proceedings on Monday.

Following the fall and collapse on Monday, Metuh was absent when proceedings on his trial resumed Tuesday, prompting his lawyer, Emeka Etiaba (SAN), who re-appeared in the case after he had on Monday announced his withdrawal, to urge the court to grant a short adjournment in the case.

Counsel to Metuh’s company, Destra Investment Limited, Tochukwu Onwugbufor (SAN), had supported Etiaba’s prayer, adding that it was the court’s doctor that suggested that Metuh be taken to the hospital on Monday.

But responding on the prayer, Justice Abang said that he did not direct any doctor to see Metuh after he fell on Monday. He added that it was wrong for the lawyer to claim that Metuh fell down in the court and collapse owing to ill health, but that “Metuh fell down on his own”.

The judge said, “The court did not direct the doctor to attend to the defendant. I would not know the person that directed the doctor to see the defendant when I rose briefly upon hearing that the defendant fell down on his own.

“The court directed him to sit down where he was but he decided to fall down on his own.”

Metuh and his company, Destra Investment Limited, is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged N400 million he was said to have illegally received from the office of the former National Security Adviser in 2014.
