No less than 29 inmates escaped to their freedom from a jail in Tamaulipas, Mexico after fleeing prison through a 40-meter-long tunnel believed to have taken several months to build.

According to reports, the escape took place about midnight last through a 40-meter-long tunnel five meters underground with 10 inmates of the Tamaulipas prison reported to have been recaptured.

Governor Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca said in an interview that construction of the tunnel had begun several months ago.

The prison had a population of 1,300 inmates as of last December, 300 more than its capacity.

Overcrowding, corruption and inmate control of prison areas have been persistent problems in Mexican prisons.
