The deadly prison fights in Mexico seems not ready to abate after a brawl between rival groups of inmates at a jail in the northern Mexico border city of Reynosa witnessed the killing of nine people and the injuring of 11 others.
Reports say the fight which broke out during family visiting hours saw rival prisoners attacking themselves with shanks, sticks and rocks as guards fired shots to bring the situation under control.
According to authorities in Tamaulipas state and the state security Coordination Group, the fight broke out after a struggle for control within the prison between two groups which eventually turned out to be bloody.
In the last three months, Mexico has been hit with deadly jail fights in overcrowded prisons plagued by riots, revenge killings and jailbreaks with powerful gangs often holding de facto control inside.
Recall last month at a prison in Acapulco, a popular resort town on Mexico’s Pacific coast, no less than 28 inmates were hacked to death by their rivals in bloody revenge killings.
