U-23 Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, has stated that the team will strive to win the bronze medal against Honduras on Saturday as a consolation for Nigerian fans across the globe for their support and believe in the team.
Germany will face Brazil in the gold medal match at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016 following their 2-0 win against Nigeria at the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo.
Left-back Lukas Klostermann made a bursting run forward and tapped in an open goal from captain Maximilian Meyer’s cross on the ground in the ninth minute.
Substitute Nils Petersen then made sure of Germany’s spot in Saturday’s final when he latched onto a low cross from forward Davie Selke in the 89th minute.
Tactically, Germany were the stronger side in the first half. Nigeria were unable to break quickly enough when they had counter-attacking opportunities.
I wanted to win the gold medal, but the fact that we did not play well. The Germans played well,”
“We are professionals, we can now claim third place. We want to give a medal to Nigeria,” Mikel said
The Chelsea midfielder added, “We gave everything last night but luck wasn’t on our side. We will keep going for bronze, to make Nigeria proud.”
Similarly, Troost-Ekong said: “we gave it everything, now we pick ourselves up again and fight to bring home bronze on Saturday.”
