Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, and former Nigeria forward, Nwankwo Kanu, have paid tribute to Ivory Coast legend, Didier Drogba on his retirement from football.

40-year-old Drogba confirmed his retirement this week following the end of his playing career with Phoenix Rising as they lost in the final of the American soccer second division league.

While Mikel hailed the Ivoirien, who was his former teammate at Chelsea of England, as one he had learnt lessons from, Kanu commended the striker for his contributions to football in Africa.

“Alla ggripa ???@didierdrogba So many memories, so many victories, so many lessons learnt with and from you. Good luck mate ⚽️,” Mikel wrote on his Instagram.

Kanu also wished the former Galatasaray star well in his future endeavours.

“Congratulations and I wish you good luck and all the best in your future career and well done for all your contributions to football in Africa and the world. @didierdrogba,” Kanu tweeted on Thursday.

Drogba had spent the last two seasons with Phoenix, where he is also a part owner, scoring 17 goals over his time playing at the club.

During his career, he also featured for clubs like Le Mans, Guingamp, Marseille, Shanghai Shenhua and the Montreal Impact.

He won four Premier League titles and the 2012 UEFA Champions League, as well as four FA Cups and two League Cups.

His international career was also something, as he scored 65 times in 105 appearances for the Ivory Coast, playing in three World Cups and being named African Footballer of the Year twice.
