In what may be ambitious territorial expansions of its sphere of operation, suspected Niger Delta militants, on Tuesday, attacked a gas pipeline belonging to the NNPC.

The incident took place at Ogijo in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The loud explosion that greeted the blow up of the pipeline connecting the Edgin Thermal Station in Ikorodu, Lagos State, was said to have sent residents running for safety.

The attack is believed to be the handiwork of militants who disguised as maintenance officials from the NNPC to blow up the gas pipeline around PZ Estate in the area.

Residents reportedly saw the suspected militants but did not pay much attention since they pretended to be officials of the NNPC who had come on routine maintenance checks.

They were however taken aback when they heard the explosion after they had left the area.

Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the state command had deployed its men to the area, adding that “some hoodlums on Tuesday went and burst a part of a gas pipeline around PZ Area in Ogijo.

“We heard that they came as if they were officials of a company in charge of the maintenance of the gas pipeline, and the residents were deceived by this ploy.

“We don’t want to conclude yet that they were militants but we call them criminals, and we will get them wherever they are”.
Adejobi further said the state police command has deployed its men to the area while also working with other sister security agencies.

“The Lagos State police command has also deployed men on their side in the area”, Adejobi further stated, adding that officials of the NNPC were already carrying out repairs on the affected section of the gas pipeline.
