Mimiko’s security aide gunned down by robbers

Men suspected to be robbers have reportedly shot and killed DSP Idowu Oyewole, the Mobile Police Officer in charge of the convoy of Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, in the state capital of Akure.

According to reports, Idowu, 45, lost his life when the three-man armed gang stormed the Sango area Akure-Owo Road, where he lived as he rushed out of his house with his service pistol to encounter the robbers after they attacked his neighbours.

Idowu reportedly engaged in an exchange of gunfire with the robbers and in the process sustained gun wounds as he escaped the scene of the shootout.

Residents later found his lifeless body a day after the shootout as he reportedly died as a result of gun wounds and his demise has thrown members of his family into a state of mourning.

Recounting his encounter with the robbers, the son of the deceased, Dare said his father picked up his service pistol immediately an alarm was raised that robbers were in the vicinity.

“One of our neighbours came to inform my dad that there were robbers in the area. He then took his service pistol and followed the neighbour.

“We learnt that on sighting my dad, the robbers exchanged fire with him.

“He was injured in the process and he withdrew from the scene. We found him dead on Thursday.”

According to Femi Joseph, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, investigations into the matter is currently ongoing adding that the culprits will soon be apprehended, while extoling the virtues of the late police officer.

“He was a disciplined officer. Our hearts are heavy,” the police spokesperson added.
