MINIMUM WAGE REVIEW: NLC vows to reject any amount less than N50,000

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to urgently review the minimum wage in the country, vowing that it would never accept any amount less than N50,000.

This was stated by the Kwara State chapter president of NLC, Abdulyekeen Agunbiade, on Tuesday in Ilorin when he addressed journalists on the state of the nation.

Insisting that the union would not shift ground on its N50,000 baseline, Agunbiade explained that going by the Labour Law, salaries of workers ought to be reviewed every ten years.

The current minimum wage in Nigeria is N18,000; the amount according to the union leader was one of the lowest in the world. He said it was disheartening that Nigerian workers earned that low amount.

According to him, Nigeria’s Labour Minister, Chris Ngige, seemed not to be in control of the ministry. He argued that if truly the minister was in control, the spate of trade disputes across the country would not have been as viral as it is presently.

Adding that the recent industrial actions by various trade unions were suspended due to patriotism displayed by the labour leaders, Agunbiade called on Ngige to address the agitating issue of minimum wage review to show he could oversee the sector.

Nigeria’s House of Representatives had recently suggested that minimum wage should be reviewed to N30,000, a suggestion that was vehemently condemned by Nigerian workers.

God punish these so called house of reps members, how much is #30k compare to what they earn in a month, there are some civil servants who can’t make one quarter of what a legislator earns all through a legislative period even if he or she works for 35 years

N50,000 is a good proposal but it can never happen in Nigeria. This government can never increase 18k to 50l, it is not possible. We need to stop deceiving ourselves

Wake up from your sleep and face the reality of things in this country. It is not possible I insist. May be in the next government, but this current government is not possible.

NLC likes to believe in the impossible, if this isn’t achieved, that means will reawake all the hopes that I have lost in Nigeria
