MISSILE PROGRAMME: US slams Iran with fresh economic sanctions

Iran has been slammed with fresh economic sanctions by the United States of America over its continued missile programme.

Reports say the US designated 18 individuals and entities for sanctions in the Asian country for supporting what it said were “illicit Iranian actors or transnational criminal activity”.

Pointing accusing fingers at Iran, US state department spokeswoman, Heather Nauert said Tehran has been testing and developing ballistic missiles “in direct defiance” of a UN Security Council resolution.

The US is “deeply” concerned about “Iran’s malign activities across the Middle East which undermine regional stability, security, and prosperity,” including support for armed groups, the Syrian regime and Houthi rebels in Yemen, she said.

The sanctions is coming two days after the US issued a demand when it called on Iran to immediately release American citizens detained on “fabricated” national security charges in Tehran.

The call came on the same day a US man, reportedly of Chinese origin was sentenced to 10 years in jail by a court in Tehran.
