MISSILE TESTS: Japan, US plan joint show of force against North Korea

The United States Navy’s USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group and the Japanese Navy are planning a joint show of force against North Korea led by defiant leader Kim Jong Un.

According to reports, the US and Japan’s Naval forces are heading towards the Korean peninsula aimed at deterring secretive Pyongyang regime from further missile tests.

With tension growing markedly, the Korean peninsula is the closest it has been to a “military clash” since Pyongyang’s first nuclear test in 2006, an influential state-run Chinese newspaper said on Wednesday.

About three days ago, the United States signaled that it was ready to flex muscles with Pyongyang after it agreed to deploy a Naval Strike group near the Korean peninsula as a show of force.

According to a US Navy official, who was not authorized to speak to the media and requested anonymity, the strike group includes an aircraft carrier and will make its way from Singapore towards the Korean peninsula.

“We feel the increased presence is necessary,” the official said, citing North Korea’s worrisome behaviour.

Recall that Pyongyang tested a liquid-fueled Scud missile which only traveled a fraction of its range into a Japanese sea causing tension among its neighbours earlier this month.
