PDP crisis: Stubborn Sheriff won’t agree to out of court settlement

The current crisis facing the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over its national chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff and his length of tenure may be put to an end on Monday, as the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party will sit to determine his tenure.

National Secretary of the party, Prof. Wale Oladipo, who made this known on Thursday while speaking with newsmen, stated that the NEC meeting would also fix a date for the party’s National Working Committee’s election.

He said, “Though some aggrieved members of the party kicked against his emergence, but I can say that through the help of the various statutory organs of the party, we have been able to agree that the various organs of the party will be meeting from Sunday. And on Monday, the NEC will meet to take a definite stand on the tenure issue.”

Sheriff’s coming as national chairman had thrown the party into disarray, as many members kicked against it, especially former ministers in the party.

But the intervention of the party’s Governors’ Forum settled the matter, as he was asked to spend only three months in office, within which time, he was asked to put in place machinery for the election of another chairman.

Meanwhile, Sheriff on Thursday paid a visit to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in Abuja, where he pledged to partner with INEC in promoting a healthy democratic culture amongst Nigerians through free, fair and transparent elections.

Sheriff while demanding explanations on certain “ambiguities foreseen in the forthcoming rerun and bye elections,” explained that political parties owed Nigerians the duty to uphold the tenets of internal democracy, just as INEC needed to conduct free and fair elections in order to justify public confidence.

its about time they settled this internal issues and start giving APC a good run for their money.
if not for the courage of Fayose, the APC would be having a field day, taking nigerians for granted. he has been doing what the national PDP should be doing. PDP needs to wake up and realise that opposition has an important role to play in a democracy

It does look as if the mentality of politicians is different from what obtains in the sane world. Otherwise why would a party settle for a character largely perceived as tainted. Anyway, they say it’s an interim arrangement. Guess it’s in the gene of political parties to stoke trouble and try to resolve it. US and the GOP on my mind.
