Montella hopes Gattuso takes AC Milan 'back where they belong'

Vincenzo Montella says it was an ‘honour’ to serve as a manager at AC Milan, and hopes the club’s new boss, Gennaro Gattuso can take the club “back where they belong.”

Montella was sacked by Milan on Monday morning after a poor start to the season, with club legend Gattuso taking his place.

“Coaching Milan was an honour, working with this group even more so,” tweeted the Coach after his sack.

The former European champions have endured a torrid start to the season despite spending heavily in the summer, winning just two of their last nine games.

The club drew 0-0 at home against Torino on Sunday and are now 18 points adrift of Serie A leaders Napoli.

Montella added in his tweet: “I thank the fans for their support, Fassone and Mirabelli for this opportunity and my staff for supporting me throughout.

“I hope Rino takes Milan back where they belong.”

The club had earlier said in a statement that the “Management of the first team is entrusted to Gennaro Gattuso, who leaves his position as Primavera coach and to whom we wish the best of luck.”

Gattuso made 468 appearances for Milan during his playing career, helping the club to two Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia and two Champions League crowns.
