More conflicts as Police in Kano says it’ll stay away from LG elections
The Kano State Police Command has announced its commitment to adhere to a court order that prohibits its involvement in the upcoming Local Government election set for Saturday, October 26, 2024.
This announcement was made in a video message on Friday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Abdullahi Haruna.
He stated, “You are very much aware of the court order which was received by the Police Command here in Kano. Item nine of the order provides that the Police should not participate in the forthcoming local government election in the state.”
Haruna emphasized that while the police will not partake in the election, their duty remains to maintain peace and order within the state. “So, the Police in Kano are not participating in the election. However, it’s our responsibility to ensure no breakdown of law and order in the state and we’re always alive to our responsibilities,” he said.

He reiterated the police’s commitment to their constitutional role of protecting lives and property. The state police commissioner, Salman Garba, has convened a meeting with various police officials, including Heads of Departments, Area Commanders, and Divisional Police Officers, to discuss strategies for upholding the police’s mandate in Kano.
“During the meeting, the Commissioner of Police stressed the importance of proactive measures to prevent and respond to security threats. He directed the command’s operational commanders to enhance patrols, increase visibility and presence in high-risk areas as well as intensify intelligence gathering,” Haruna explained.
Additionally, the commissioner has urged ongoing collaboration and information sharing with local communities. “These steps are crucial to maintaining law and order, preventing criminal activities, and ensuring the safety of all the inhabitants in the state,” he added.
Though the police says it’ll adhere to the federal high court’s ruling which halted conduct of the LG elections, another conflicting ruling was issued by a state high court directing the elections to go on as planned.
