Chelsea closer to title with win over Southampton

Nigeria’s Victor Moses was rested as Chelsea began their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 6-0 thrashing of Qarabag at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

Chelsea, who failed to qualify last season, rested several first-team players for the visit of the Azerbaijani champions, but still won with ease.

Pedro opened the scoring 5 minutes into the game, before David Zappacosta doubled their lead with a spectacular goal, sending over a cross that flew past Ibrahim Sehic on the half-hour mark.

Cesar Azpilicueta headed home a third 10 minutes after the break, before substitute Tiemoue Bakayoko scored his first Blues goal with a deflected shot from close range on 71 minutes.

Batshuayi then scored twice under 4 minutes to crown his efforts and hand Antonio Conte’s side their joint biggest win in the Champions League, as they get ready to face Roma and Atletico Madrid in the other group ties.

Chelsea will return to the Premier League this weekend as they face Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
