Motive for Nigerian murder in South Africa unclear – Envoy

The Consul General of Nigeria in Johannesburg, South Africa, Mr. Godwin Adama, said on Monday the motive behind the killing of another Nigerian in the former apartheid enclave was yet to be determined.

Adama, who confirmed the murder of the victim identified as Mr. Chikamso Ufordi, said in a statement on Tuesday that he was not in a hurry to conclude that the murder was xenophobic or criminal.

The Consul- General however said he was yet to get a full report on the incident and pointed out that although the incident was highly condemnable, incidences like that were common in South Africa which has one of the highest crime rates in the world.

“Murder statistics in South Africa indicate that over 50 people are violently murdered in a day, about 20,330 in a year.

“We are, however, investigating and equally following up police investigations on the matter to see the motive behind the attack.

“We are however not in a hurry to conclude that it was xenophobic or criminal,” Adama said.

The death of the Nigerian was confirmed by the President of Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA), Mr. Ben Okoli, who said Ufordi died on the spot while the companion in his car sustained gunshots wounds.
