After securing a draw against Everton on Sunday, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has explained why he brought on Marouane Fellaini, who took three minutes to absolutely ruin Manchester United’s day at Goodison Park.

The Reds were leading by a first half goal from Ibrahimovic, and looked to be in control as they were heading for a much needed three points.

But Mourinho brought the midfielder in to the game with just minutes to go, which proved to be a major mistake as he gave away a penalty just moments later. And Everton’s Leighton Baines converted the spot kick to grab a 1-1 draw for the Toffees.

Although fans had taken to Twitter pleading with the club to sell the Belgium midfielder, the Portugese boss, while speaking to a reporter who asked him about the decision, said:

“I thought you would know more about football than you do, because the answer is obvious.

“Everton is not the passing team anymore, like they were, Everton is a team that plays direct, everything is direct, goalkeeper: direct, Ashley Williams: direct, Funes Mori: direct, everything is direct.

“And when a team is losing and plays direct, intensifies the direct football, and when you have a player on the bench with two metres you play the player in front of the defensive line to help the team to the match,” he stated.

According to records, Sunday’s game against Everton was Fallaini’s 100th appearance for United since joining them from Everton.

Ultimately, the result leaves the Red Devils 13 points off Premier League leaders Chelsea and nine behind fourth placed Manchester City.
