Mourinho wants Ibrahimovic, Rooney to stay at United

Manchester United Boss Jose Mourinho on Friday opened up that he wants Wayne Rooney to continue with the club and expects Zlatan Ibrahimovic to extend his contract.

Record-breaker, Rooney, who denounced the possibility of a move to China in an announcement last week, has recently been linked with a return to former club, Everton; but Mourinho referred to the speculation as one that “makes no sense.”

35-year-old Ibrahimovic, who has scored 26 goals in 38 appearances for United, since joining on a free transfer from Paris St-Germain in July, has in his one-season deal an option for a second year at Old Trafford.

The Swede scored twice in Sunday’s 3-2 EFL Cup final victory over Southampton, after which he said he will “see what happens” about extending his deal. .

But speaking about the Ibrahimovic on Friday, Mourinho said: “I see him (Ibrahimovic) staying with us.

“The next transfer window will bring us to a different level because I will bring in a few players. Zlatan will be fundamental in the second year. I think he will stay.”

On Rooney, he added: “What I have is a very strong message, ‘I don’t go anywhere. I want to fight with this team and help until the end of season’. 100% he will be with us for rest of season.

“Next season, 100% I would like him to be with us, but always the player is very important.”

Mourinho is in his first season with the Red Devils, and just last Sunday, he lifted his first title of the season – the English Football League (EFL) Cup – with the team, who are yet in the race for the English FA Cup, Europa League and the Premier League top four this season.

United will play Chelsea in FA Cup quarter-finals on March 13, will also face Rostov in their round of 16 tie in the Europa League, and play Bournemouth in their matchday 27 of the English Premier League on Saturday.
