Sunderland manager David Moyes who took charge last July after Sam Allardyce left to become England manager has resigned.

This is coming a day after the end of the English Premier League 2016-17 season with the club already been relegation from the top-flight.

Sunderland’s 10-year stay in the Premier League ended when they lost to Bournemouth in April, but in their last game of the season, champions Chelsea thrashed them 5-1 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

54-year old Moyes informed club chairman Ellis Short of his decision to step down at a meeting in London on Monday.

In a statement on the club website, Moyes said: “I would like to thank Ellis Short and the Board for giving me the opportunity to manage Sunderland and the fans for always being so passionately supportive of their club.

“I wish the players and my successor well in their efforts towards promotion back to the Premier League.”

The former Everton and Manchester United boss led Sunderland to finish the season bottom of the table, having lost 26 of their 38 games.

Sunderland will be joined in the second tier of English football by Middlesbrough and Hull City.
