Mr President! Forget the clutter, here are 9 things to act on immediately

Buhari will return to London for follow-ups --Presidency

Pictures don’t tell lies! President Muhammadu Buhari made a majestic return to office on Monday. It was his first day at work after a 50-day absence due to health challenges.

He was smartly dressed, as usual, and could be seen in good spirit with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who put up a good cheer.

Reports quoted Osinbajo as saying, “We are basically trying to bring the President to speed on some of what has been done while he was away and he has given a few directives on what we should be doing in so many different areas; the Northeast, the budget, the economy, quite a range of issues.

“We just had a meeting for over an hour and his readiness for work isn’t in doubt at all.”

The President’s table appeared uncluttered as he seemed to have cleared most of the official files before him, or, indeed, had little to do. Obviously, Buhari’s scantly busy office belied the myriad of problems confronting the country.

There is a huge clutter, no doubt. Here are 9 things the President may consider acting on immediately to ensure continuity, stability and progress.

1, Draw the lines
Inspire a bill to the National Assembly (NASS) to resolve the seeming constitutional gap over how long a President or Governor would stay away from duty on grounds of ill-health.

2, Unlock the market
Identify and consolidate the gains of the recent Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) forex policy initiative which seems to keep the fall of the Naira in check. This and other monetary policies could provide solutions to rising inflation.

3, Clear the clogs
Aggressively pursue the Ease-of-Doing-Business agenda which framework was launched by Vice President Osinbajo.

4, Return the smiles
Review the report of the tripartite committee on minimum wage, and call for immediate implementation of agreed terms to rekindle hope in the workforce.

5, Rev the engine
It is obvious the engine of government needs an overhaul. Do the needful, sack the dead woods!

6, Take a tour
We hear so much is happening by way of infrastructure development. Showcase your achievements. Take a tour just like Osinbajo did. It creates a perfect connect.

7, Call El-Rufai to order
The Kaduna State governor has become garrulous and flippant, stoking inter-ethnic tension with his statements. His recent outing at the Social media week seems to lend credence to quiet gossips that the alleged uncontrolled attacks by herdsmen is, indeed, orchestrated and well organized.

8, Work the Niger Delta magic
There looks to be some magic taking place in the Niger Delta at the moment. Recreate the magic in the IPOB-troubled South-east. Dialogue pays!

9, Think Nigeria
Take action and reverse the Aso Rock Clinic fortunes. It should not remain a mere consulting clinic from where the incumbent or future presidents may jet out abroad for medical attention. It’s better funded than most Teaching Hospitals in the land. Let the yearly billions sunk into the project count.

Above all, this is the most important thing to be done by Mr. President, “Return the smiles”, Nigerians need to smile again in order to revive all dead hopes on this administration.

Honestly, Buhari needs to ‘Take a tour’ and move closer to Nigerians, he’s too far from the people. Osinbajo was able to subside the growing chaos caused by Buhari’s distance in less than 50 days because he moved closer to the people and made us feel we are actively involved in Government (although, we knew our decisions are worthless then, but, he made us feel important).

Mr man, you are deceiving yourself. So it is because osinbajo moved closer to people that made him get what he did in 50 days? Absolutely nooooo. You people are getting something wrong here, did osinbajo moved to the masses or did he come to your house because I don’t understand what you people meant.

The nine things are easier expressed but to impress them is not an easy task. Buhari does want to do all these even more than that but he must tread with caution too if he wants to last especially reving the engine.

Sacking of needless ministers or DGs and any other brainless people is not a big deal. He will if need be.
