Mugabe set for probe over missing $15bn diamond revenue

Ousted long-serving Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe will appear before the country’s parliament to answer questions about a missing $15 billion diamond revenue during his tenure.

That much information was revealed by a legislator who also noted that the Zimbabwe’s parliament has ordered the former leader to appear before it next month in order to answer questions over the missing revenue generated from the sale of diamonds.

According to Themba Mliswa who heads parliament’s mining committee, a panel probing the matter had interviewed former Marange mining executives as well as the police, army and intelligence services and now wants to talk to Mugabe.

“The committee resolved that the former president should appear on 9 May so that he can explain the disappearance of the $15 billion,” Mliswa said.

“This is not political persecution. After gathering all evidence, it was the committee’s view that we call the former Head of State and government.”

It will be Mugabe’s first public appearance since last November when the army deposed him in a de facto coup after nearly four decades in power.
