MUMBAI BUILDING COLLAPSE: 33 feared dead, dozens missing as death toll rises
The death toll arising from a residential building collapse in the densely populated area of Bhendi Bazaar in Mumbai has risen to 33 as hopes to rescue more survivors fade more than a day after the tragic incident.
According to reports, rescuers worked through the night in search of nearly a dozen others that may still be buried, removing the rubble of a collapsed century-old apartment building in India’s financial capital of Mumbai.
Police said 33 bodies had been recovered from the rubble by early Friday, and hope was fading of finding anyone alive even as Fire officer Prabhat Kumar revealed that 15 injured survivors have been pulled from the debris so far.

Authorities have no clear idea how many people lived there or were in the ground floor work spaces, but police say nearly a dozen people are missing and feared trapped beneath the huge mound of broken concrete slabs and twisted steel girders.
The office of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted condolences, saying the event was “saddening”.
According to reports, the four-storey building collapsed around 08:40am (03:10 GMT) after heavy rains in India’s financial capital killing over two dozen people.
Thousands of buildings in Mumbai are more than a century old with their foundations weakened by years of heavy monsoon rains.
