Musa, Ikeme, Ighalo, Moses declare war on Egypt

Super Eagles players painted Europe with goals at the weekend warning the Pharaohs of Egypt to expect a tough match when both teams battle this week.

About four of the players invited for the back-to-back AFCON games were on target for their clubs abroad, a development that will apparently gladdens the heart of the national team selectors ahead of the crunch matches billed for March 25 and 29 respectively.

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa is proving to be the hottest Nigerian player at the moment when scored his fourth goal in his last four matches in all competitions for CSKA Moscow as his brace gave his Russian club a 2-0 win against Kuban Krasnoder on Saturday. Musa struck in the 21st and 81st minutes for CSKA Moscow.

The Nigeria captain who had earlier missed an opportunity in the 19th minute, opened scoring two minutes later when he smashed in a left-footed effort from a corner kick past Kuban goalkeeper Aleksandr Belenov. With less than ten minutes to the end of the match, the former VVV Venlo player took the game beyond their opponents when he finished off Alan Dzagoev’s assist into the centre of the post.

Two newly-invited players to the national team Fernandi Adi and Umar Aminu also proved a point as they were on target for their respective clubs.

Adi was the hero for his Major League Soccer side, Portland Timbers, as they came back from two goals down to secure a point against nine-man Real Salt Lake also on Saturday.

Adi, who netted 19 goals last season for MLS champions Portland, started the revival in the 80th minute to take the game to 2-1.

The big striker then completed his brace four minutes later to seal a 2-2 draw when he converted a spot kick.

He has three goals in the new MLS season while the brace took his tally in Major League Soccer to 28 goals in the regular season, the sixth-most goals netted by a Timbers player since the formation of the club in 1975.

Aminu scored in the 47th minute to give Osmanlispor a 3-1 win over Genclerbirligi in the Turkish league on Saturday. He has six goals in the Super Lig.

Earlier on Sarturday, Alex Iwobi was the man of the match for the English Premier League title hopeful Arsenal as he scored a goal in their 2-0 win over Everton at the Goodison Park.

It was Iwobi’s first EPL start and his maiden league goal. He has been in good form for the Gunners of late after he posted another exciting performance in their 3-1 loss to Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League last Wednesday.
