'N450M DIEZANI FUND: Chime's defection to APC won't save him'

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), has debunked insinuations in some quarters that following former Enugu State Governor Sullivan Chime’s defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress that investigation into his alleged corruption case by the commission will be dropped.

Disproving those making such assumptions, the anti-graft agency’s South East zonal Head of Operation, Mr Johnson Babalola, said that Chime’s corruption case is still under investigation and that the commission is close to hooking him and others involved in the alleged crime.

Babalola made this disclosure to newsmen at the press centre Independent Layout, Enugu, explaining that Chime is still not far from being hooked up in N450 million campaign fund allegedly disbursed by Diezani Alisson-Madueke for 2015 presidential election.

He further said that Rita Mba, who was also accused with Chime and some others, is also under investigation.

He said, “Chime is still under investigation. Criminal cases don’t have expiring date. The case is still not closed. Rita has the right to allege that we have compromised. I want to tell you that she too is still under investigation and I don’t want to say more than that about the case.

“We are making progress in the case, even as Rita Mba petitioned EFCC for compromising Chime’s issue and they are not far from being hooked by N450 million Deziani Madueke campaign fund.”

Babalola however lamented that EFCC is constrained financially in carrying out their difficult undertaking as a corruption fighting agency.

“We are handicapped financially for the work because the people we are fighting are still the same people that will approve our funds.”
