Nadal crashes out of Wimbledon, Murray reaches quarterfinals

World no. 2 Rafael Nadal has crashed out of Wimbledon after an epic five-set defeat to 16th seed Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.

The Spaniard’s hopes of winning a third Wimbledon title are over for another year, as he fought back from two sets down before Muller took a fifth match point to win 6-3 6-4 3-6 4-6 15-13.

The 15-time Grand Slam champion was considered one of the favourites to win the men’s title after an excellent year in which he has reached the Australian Open final, losing to Roger Federer, and earned a record 10th French Open triumph.

Nadal had not dropped a set in his opening three matches in SW19, but Muller represented a much tougher challenge than his previous opponents.

“It was not my best match against a very uncomfortable opponent,” said the 2008 and 2010 champion.

“Well done to him. He played great, especially in the fifth set, but I fought to the last ball.”

Muller, 34, who’s reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-final since the 2008 US Open, will face Marin Cilic in the last eight.

Also on Monday, defending champion and top seed Andy Murray saw off Frenchman Benoit Paire 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 6-4 on Centre Court.

“I thought I played well today, apart from a couple of sloppy service games in the first set,” said Murray after the win.

The Scot reached a 10th consecutive Wimbledon quarter-final with a straight-set win over the world number 46, and will take on American 24th seed Sam Querrey on Wednesday in the last-8.
