NAFDAC says there’s contaminated but not plastic rice in Nigeria

The heightened fear across the country about the circulation of plastic rice has been doused by National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), which clarified that there was nothing like plastic rice in Nigeria.

The agency’s Acting Director General, Mrs. Yetunde Oni, who stated this at a joint briefing with the Deputy Comptroller-General of Nigeria Custom Service (NCS), Mr. Umar Ilya, however confirmed that a consignment of contaminated rice is in the country.

She therefore warned Nigerians to stop consuming contaminated rice as it could be injurious to health.

Presenting the final laboratory result on the commodity, the NAFDAC boss confirmed that while the rice is not plastic, it is unsuitable for human consumption.

She said the agency will set a date for public destruction of the confiscated consignment since it had failed what she called integrity test.
