Nasarawa workers continue strike, dare Al-Makura to employ fresh graduates

Nasarawa state workers’ strike continues today despite Governor Al-Makura’s threat to replace them with fresh graduates.

Organised labour unions in the state, not minding the governor’s position directed the state and local government workers to ignore government threat of sacking any worker who fails to resume work on Monday.

In a statement jointly signed by chairman of the state’s chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Mr Abubakar Adeka, and the chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC) Mr Danladi Sabo-Namo on Sunday in Lafia, the group said, “The strike we started on July 4 is indefinite; disregard the call by the government to resume work on Monday, July 11.”

The workers embarked on an indefinite strike after the state government’s decision to cut down their salaries by 50 per cent.

And the Governor, on July 9, said he would recruit fresh graduates to replace workers who failed to return to work on Monday.

But the organise labour unions dared him, advising workers to remain at home while it make efforts to protect their rights.
