National chairman position is open to 3 zones in southern Nigeria, PDP insists

Ahead its coming national convention, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emphasized that any of the three zones of the southern region of the country can emerge the party’s national chairman.

The party’s National Caretaker Committee (NCC) chairman, Ahmed Makarfi, made this clarification against the backdrop of rumours in some quarters that the office of the party’s chairman has been zoned to the South-West.
He said any of the three zones in the southern region comprising of South-West, South-South and South-East was free to contest the position and be elected as the next party chairman.

Makarfi made this clarification on Tuesday at the PDP national headquarters, Abuja, during a meeting with eight aspirants vying for the office of the party chairman.

Oyo State former governor, Rashidi Ladoja, who only few weeks ago returned to the party from Accord Party, was present at the meeting which suggested he was one of those aspiring to be the party’s next chairman.

Others who were at the meeting were Chief Bode George, Professor Tunde Adeniran, Professor Taoheed Adedoja, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, Prince Uche Secondus, Chief Raymond Dokpesi and Chief Gbenga Daniel.

Makarfi made them understand before the meeting went into a closed-door that NEC under his leadership had no such power as to change the zoning arrangements that had been agreed on by the national convention of the party.

“We have no power beyond the convention and I want to remind all of us, the only thing the convention did was to zone two positions and as chairman or caretaker committee, you cannot go beyond that.

“The office of the national chairman is zoned to the South while that of the president is for the North. No micro zoning.”

After the meeting, George told newsmen that they all agreed at the meeting to work together in the interest of the party.
