Nat’l Sports Festival: 9,221 athletes to compete, as Edo shuts down schools

The Edo state government has ordered that public and private schools in the state be shut down during the 20th National Sports Festival holding in the state.

Schools are to be closed down from Monday March 23 and reopen on Thursday, April 2, in order for residents to attend the fiesta billed for March 22 to April 1st.

This was revelead in a statement by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Jimoh ljegbai, who said the school calendar has been amended for both public and private institutions.

“Teachers, parents and pupils/student are enjoined to attend all events of the NSF,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, a total of 9,221 athletes are expected to feature at this year’s National Sports Festival.

The Games are set to kick off in an opening ceremony at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Sunday March 22.

The hosts Team Edo have the highest number of athletes and coaches in their contingent, followed by Team Delta, Team Lagos and Team Ogun in that order.

Jigawa have the lowest number of delegates.

Unlike the last festival, this one will feature all the 36 states and federal capital territory.
