Navy arrests 15, illegal fishing vessel in Calabar

In a drive to create safer waterways, men of the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) of the Nigerian Navy on Tuesday arrested 15 men illegally operating a fishing trawler illegally along the Calabar waterways.

While parading the men and vessel at the NNS Victory jetty in Calabar, Flag Officer Commanding of the ENC, Rear Admiral Atiku Abdulkadir, said the arrests were made at the Calabar Fairway Buoy.

Those arrested include 14 Nigerians and a Ghanaian without complete documents too.

According to him, “From the security point of view it can be taken over by pirates and this can become a problem for others. This ship is not on any of our lists cleared to be at sea.”
The FOC said after their investigations have been concluded, they will be handed over to relevant authorities.

The captain of the arrested vessel, Mr. Martin Baleta, who said he was from Badagry, admitted he was operating without relevant documents.
