NEC names El-Rufai chair of new govs committee for renewed industrialization push

The Federal Government and state governments Thursday agreed to create a harmonized platform that will lead the renewed drive towards the industrialization of Nigeria.

To this end, the National Economic Council (NEC) chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, formed a “Governors’ Committee” comprising of six representative governors from the geo-political zones to work with the Industrial Policy and Competitiveness Advisory Council.

This was revealed by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, in a statement issued following the conclusion of the NEC meeting held in Abuja at the Presidential Villa on Thursday.

The vice president’s spokesperson revealed that presentation to NEC detailing the plan of the Industrial Policy and Competitiveness Advisory Council (NIPCAC) was done by the Minister of State, Industry, Trade and Investment, Aisha Abubakar.

Abubakar was reported as saying that the six governors selected were from Kaduna, Kwara, Ogun, Abia, Edo and Adamawa states, with committee to be chaired by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Akande stated that the decision “was one of the highlights at the National Economic Council meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, earlier today at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa”.

He added that , “The Council had received a presentation on the work of the recently inaugurated Advisory Council that has top private sector and public sector officials, and industry chieftains as members.

“The Council is chaired by Prof. Osinbajo and has the mandate to identify key and practical areas where both public and private sectors can work together to significantly accelerate Nigeria’s industrial drive.

“After the presentation was made to the Council, a committee of Governors from the nation’s six geo-political zones was formed to work with the Council in order to get the States actively involved in the national industrialisation effort by receiving and reviewing recommendations of the Council and fashioning out how best to implement them”.

 

Akande listed other highlights of the NEC meeting to include presentation by the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),Mustapha Maihaja, on emergency management issues include the recent flooding across different states of the federation; presentation by the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, mostly centred around the monkey virus outbreak, and presentation by the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib, providing update on polio eradication initiatives and immunization strategies.

Other highlights included presentation by the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, which was majorly on the excess crude account and budget support loan facility, and presentation by the Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, providing update on stabilization fund account and natural resources development fund.
